clue 5

What is the theme of "About Effie?"

The theme of the story "About Effie" is that people do not always understand some statements or actions clearly in the beginning. However, those statements can mean a lot to another person and it can be used to influence others. Effie understands something that Neil does not know. At first Neil did not care about what Effie thought about, but as time passed, he became interested and finally asked Effie who she was waiting for.

Find a verse from the Bible that relates to the theme of "About Effie."

Genesis 2:17

"but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

This relates to the theme because God and Satan knew something that man didn't. Adam was influenced by Satan from this unclear information and ate from the tree.

Who is Effie waiting for?

I think Effie is waiting for death. I think that is why Effie is so scared when she is prepared for Him. I do not know why He has to ride on a black cloud, but I think that she will die when it is raining and there is lightning.

This story contains a lot of Christ imagery. Write down three separate sentences from the story that might symbolize Jesus and explain why Timothy Findley might have written these into his story.

  • "On a cloud," she whispered. "A big black cloud. That's the rule"
    • (2 Samuel 22:10) In the bible it says that God will come down on a black cloud when David was in need. So I think Timothy wrote this because Effie was in need.
  • "If there was even thunder and lighting and music then H'd come."
    • In Revelations it says that Jesus will come at the sound of a trumpet. He will come and save us, so I think that Timothy wrote this because Effie will be saved.
  • "Who's come dear?" "This Man. This man she's waiting for."
    • Many people still do not know Jesus. So when we tell them, they might be confused and questioning. I think that Timothy wrote this because he realized that many people around the world do not know about Jesus.

Can non-Christian authors reveal truth about God's world?

Yes, they can. Even though they would not realize that they are writing about God, they can write about it without knowing. There are many universal morals written in the Bible, and non-Christians also write about those. Maybe authors from different religions can even write about the truth of God’s world.
